MAIN GALLERY: “Searching For Queertopia”
Works by Alex Hernandez & Neil Rivas
Muxe is a Zapotec term for what is commonly known in the English-speaking world as ‘Queer.’ In the town of Juchitán de Zaragoza (Oaxaca, México), the people there honor its Muxe community by hosting Vela de ‘Las Intrépidas,’ a three-day event held annually with a procession and celebration. “Searching for Queertopia” is a collaborative exhibition that revisits the experiences of Alexander Hernandez’s participation and Neil Rivas’ visual documentation in this event, and includes photos, textiles, video, and multimedia in its installation.
